Waterfall, Gorges de Colombières

Gorges de Colombières cascade

The Ruisseau d'Arles plunges down from the Caroux plateau through the Gorges de Colombières. It forms a long series of cascades, fast-flowing in winter and spring. The pools between the cascades are popular for swimming in the summer, despite the "Baignade Interdite" signs!

Lamalou villa

Villa in Lamalou-les-Bains
This is one of the many attractive villas in Lamalou-les-Bains dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. At that time Lamalou was a very fashionable spa town with many famous visitors. The spa activity is still flousihing today but many of these villas have been split into separate apartments for "Les curistes"; those coming for "la cure" at the spa.

Château de Margon

Château de Margon

The beautiful Château de Margon was originally constructed in the XIIIc but was remodelled in 1521 by Pierre de Plantavit. The arches of the butress wall are known as "Banastas". I guess that this is an Occitan word. The gardens and château can be visited, by appointment, in the Summer months. This photo is the result of stitching 2 photos together. I don't have a wide enough angle lens to take it in one!

Misty Forest

Misty view from Forest

After a few sunny days we have returned to damp, misty weather. This is the view this morning from the Forêt des Écrivains-Combattants.

La Bastide, Hérépian

La Bastide

This building is called La Bastide. It is a much altered, fortified farm on the outskirts of the village of Hérépian. It guards a fording point of the river Orb where a medieval road from Béziers crosses on its way north. I believe that the projections around the tower would at one time have supported some form of battlements. On the near left corner you may be able to make out a circular balcony. I guess this dates from earlier times too.

La Défile de Marie Close

La Défile de Marie Close

Taken on a walk with Mostyn and Button, this rocky valley is near to the village of Cruzy. Snow still lingering in mid-March - almost unheard of for this part of the world!

Mercoirol in snow

St Michel de Mercoirol

We had a heavy fall of snow overnight. The photo shows the chapel of St Michel de Mercoirol from our house.

Mare Valley

Mare Valley from La Rouquette

This view of the valley of the River Mare shows the village of Rongas with, in the distance, the town of St-Gervais-sur-Mare. Taken during a very pleasant walk with Mostyn and Button.

Beware of the Termite

Beware of the Termite??

Mostyn and I saw this curious road sign while out walking today. It is between the village of Les Salces and a small artists commune. A joke I believe, but perhaps you can think of a good reason for it!
